CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF: socialization in the days of isolation

This book is a humorous look at the ubiquity of zoom during the pandemic. In thinking about the strangeness of socialization in these days of isolation, this book reimagines my online interactions as conversations with myself.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF: socialization in the days of isolation

These are lonely times. These are strange times.

These are times we spend staring at screens, trying to replace what we cannot do, where we cannot go, the people we cannot see.

In this second year of the pandemic, it still feels like safety is beyond reach, like normal is something fading into distant memory, longing, and a curious sense of nostalgia.

And ourselves, which we stare at on the screen, no matter who else we’re talking to.

We stare at ourselves and our digital selves stare back.

Conversations never used to be this way.

But in these days of isolation, this is all we’ve got, even if it isn’t all we need.

Maybe it’s enough to carry us through these dark days, illuminated only by the light of our glowing screens, until this loneliness comes to an end, and we can see those we care about face to face once again.
